The main objective of this project is to develop an embedded-based automatic solar tracking system that tracks the position of the sun based on time. The system uses a Real-Time Clock (RTC) to determine the approximate position of the sun at different times of the day and automatically adjusts the orientation of the solar panel accordingly.
In this system, a PIC microcontroller acts as the main control unit. Based on the time information received from the RTC module, the microcontroller controls a DC motor to rotate the solar panel towards the desired direction of the sun. This enables the solar panel to receive maximum sunlight throughout the day, thereby improving solar energy generation efficiency.
The controller continuously monitors the programmed time schedule and provides appropriate control signals to the motor mechanism. The motor moves and stabilizes the solar panel at predefined angles corresponding to the movement of the sun.
The system consists of compact circuitry built around a PIC microcontroller, RTC module, DC motor, and motor driver circuit. The control program is developed using Embedded C language. The PICkit 2 programmer is used to compile and load the program into the PIC microcontroller.
Such automatic solar tracking systems can be useful in solar power generation systems and specialized applications where maximum solar energy utilization is required.
The main objectives of the project are:
