The main objective of this project is to design and develop a GPS and digital compass-based navigation system for blind people that provides safe and independent navigation assistance using embedded technology.

The main objective of this project is to design and develop a GPS and digital compass-based navigation system for blind people that provides safe and independent navigation assistance using embedded technology. The system is built around a microcontroller that interfaces with a GPS module, HMC5883L digital compass, IR sensor, GSM module, voice module, buzzer, speaker, and LED indicators. A rechargeable battery power supply is used to operate the entire system. The GPS module provides the current location of the user, while the HMC5883L digital compass determines the direction of movement. The IR sensor detects nearby obstacles and alerts the user through a buzzer and voice module connected to a speaker. The voice module provides spoken navigation guidance, enabling visually impaired users to move safely and independently. The LED indicators provide system status information where required. A special feature of the proposed system is that when the GPS signal is lost or becomes unavailable, the microcontroller automatically activates the GSM module to send an SMS alert containing the last available location information to a predefined emergency contact. This improves user safety by informing caregivers or family members about the user’s last known position during navigation. The proposed system is a low-cost, portable, and user-friendly assistive device that combines GPS navigation, digital compass orientation, obstacle detection, voice guidance, and GSM-based emergency communication. It is suitable for assisting visually impaired individuals in outdoor navigation and emergency situations, providing greater independence, safety, and confidence during travel.
