The proposed project presents a smart wheelchair system with obstacle detection, automatic stopping, and Bluetooth-based obstacle distance monitoring. The system is designed to improve the safety, convenience, and mobility of physically challenged and elderly individuals. It consists of a microcontroller, an SR04 ultrasonic sensor, a Bluetooth module, a DC motor driver, DC motors, a regulated power supply, and LED indicators.
The ultrasonic sensor continuously measures the distance between the wheelchair and nearby obstacles. The measured distance is processed by the microcontroller and transmitted to a Bluetooth-connected smartphone application, where the obstacle distance is displayed in real time. When an obstacle is detected within a predefined safety distance, the microcontroller automatically stops the wheelchair by controlling the DC motor driver, thereby helping to prevent collisions. Once the obstacle is cleared and the path is safe, the wheelchair can resume movement through the appropriate control mechanism. The Bluetooth module enables wireless communication between the wheelchair and the smartphone, while LED indicators provide additional visual status information.
This system offers a cost-effective and user-friendly solution for enhancing wheelchair safety through real-time obstacle distance monitoring and automatic obstacle avoidance. The proposed design can reduce the risk of accidents, improve user confidence, and support safer independent mobility.
