The main aim of this project is to develop an automated system for detecting potholes and speed humps on roads and reporting their locations for road maintenance and driver safety. The system uses ultrasonic sensors to measure the distance between the vehicle body and the road surface. A PIC microcontroller compares the measured distance with a predefined threshold value to determine whether the road surface contains a pothole, a hump, or is smooth. A GPS receiver is used to capture the geographical coordinates of the detected potholes and humps, while a camera records images or video of the road condition for further verification.
The detected road condition and location information are transmitted to a registered mobile number through a GSM modem in the form of an SMS alert. The system also includes an IR sensor to detect nearby obstacles or vehicles, helping the vehicle operate safely during monitoring. DC motors are used for the movement of the prototype vehicle. By automatically identifying road surface irregularities and sending their exact locations, the proposed system provides a reliable, low-cost, and efficient solution for road condition monitoring, accident prevention, and timely road maintenance.
