Landslides pose significant threats to lives and infrastructure, particularly in mountainous and hilly regions. Early detection is crucial to mitigate the risks associated with such natural disasters. This paper presents an IoT-based landslide detection system that uses a combination of sensors, microcontroller technology, and cloud computing for real-time monitoring and early warning. The system is designed using an Arduino microcontroller, interfaced with various sensors, including moisture sensors, vibration sensors, and an MPU6050 accelerometer. These sensors continuously monitor soil moisture levels, ground vibrations, and land tilt, which are critical indicators of potential landslide activity. The data collected from the sensors are processed by the Arduino, and alerts are generated when abnormal conditions are detected. A Wi-Fi module (e.g., ESP8266) transmits the data to ThingSpeak, a cloud-based platform, for real-time monitoring and data visualization. Additionally, a local LCD display shows the current status of the sensors, and a Buzzer is activated to alert nearby individuals of any impending danger. By integrating these components, the system offers a comprehensive solution for landslide detection and early warning, allowing timely intervention. The use of IoT ensures that the system can be accessed remotely, providing authorities and emergency responders with critical information. The simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and real-time capabilities of the proposed system make it an ideal tool for landslide detection in vulnerable regions.

The main objectives of the project are:
  • Detect Landslides Early: Use sensors to monitor soil moisture, vibrations, and land movement to detect signs of a landslide.
  • Provide Early Warnings: Trigger alerts with a buzzer and cloud notifications when dangerous conditions are detected, helping people take action.
  • Remote Monitoring: Send data to the ThingSpeak cloud for real-time tracking and remote access from anywhere.
  • Display Data Locally: Show sensor readings on an LCD screen for immediate information at the site.
  • Cost-Effective Solution: Build an affordable and easy-to-deploy system that can be used in landslide-prone areas.
  • Improve Safety: Help reduce the risk to people and property by providing early warnings and monitoring.
  • Automate Alerts: Automatically send alerts when the system detects dangerous changes in environmental conditions.
